Patiala was established by Baba Ala Singh.

The district is one of the famous princely states of erstwhile Punjab, forming the south eastern part of Punjab, surrounded by Fatehgarh Sahib and Roopnagar, Union Territory (Chandigarh) in the north, Sangrur in the west and Haryana in east and south.
